Reporting to the Secondary principals, the Academic Counsellor is responsible for assisting students to make well-informed decisions regarding course selection, educational goal-setting, boarding school and university choice and applications, intended study major, and ultimate career paths.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Students
1. Provide individual counselling to all secondary students on boarding school and university application processes, such as external exam requirements, subject selections, destination(s), choice of school, etc.
2. Provide group counselling to relevant grades on the importance of subject selection, extra-curricular choices, summer programmes, internships, university fairs, etc.
3. Regularly meet with parents either on an individual or group basis to discuss and offer advice on the overall boarding school or university application process
4. Develop and administer educational and career programmes for students from grades 6-12
5. Compilation and mailing of boarding school and university packets, including references, essays and transcripts, etc
6. Write references for all boarding and university applications
7. Make and deliver parent workshops and presentations during school information sessions
8. Plan and organize pre-departure briefings for graduating and leaving students to prepare them for their university or boarding school experience
Building relationships with boarding schools and universities
1. Develop and maintain relationships with boarding school and university representatives – visiting campuses (where possible) and planning a calendar of campus visits to the school
2. Maintain affiliations with professional organizations such as CIS, OACAC and attending relevant conferences to promote HD students and the school.
Secondary School
1. Develop and teach the career/university guidance curriculum
2. Advise on the importance and implication of subject selection at IGCSE and IB levels
3. Develop good lines of communication with teachers to obtain academic information on students
4. Work closely with English department on providing extra guidance to students with their personal statements and admission essays
